Wat Tham Suea
Krabi’s most important Buddhist temple Wat Tham Suea, which literally means tiger cave temple, is located in the Khiriwong Valley amidst lush forests and mountains with several hundred years old large trees approximately 9 kilometers northeast of the town. Like other forest temples Wat Tham Suea’s many buildings and shrines spreat over a vast area.
The temple was founded 30 years ago, after the monk Luang Por Chamnean Srilasetatho came to meditate in one of the many caves of the towering limestone cliffs in the area.
“As legend has it, while meditating alone, a tiger came into the cave but did not harm him. Thus the temple was created on that spot.”
1237 steps lead up to the top of the 300m high cliff and its hilltop shrine, a climb, not for the fainthearted, which rewards with the most beautiful panoramic view of the region. Please keep in mind to dress appropriately while visiting the temple!
